The Banks Are Right to Block Ai Agents. KAELUM Gives Them a Safe Way to Say Yes.

An Agent holding your password is a risk no Bank should accept. KAELUM keeps Ai out of the Bank Account entirely: you Fund once with Consent, and your Agent spends only what you Chose.

By Greggar Deterville, Founder and CEO, KAELUM Technologies Ltd

The Week the Banks said No

In the space of a few days in October 2026, four of the largest financial institutions in the United States drew the same line: outside Ai agents will not move customer money.

JPMorgan's Jamie Dimon warned of rogue agents on the bank's third-quarter earnings call. Charles Schwab's Rick Wurster told Bloomberg Television that Schwab turns away outside agents trying to reach client money dozens of times a week. Citigroup told the Financial Times that third-party assistants may not log in to a customer's account or transact directly. Bank of America set a condition rather than a ban: a person in the loop.

Most of these banks still allow outside tools to read balances through approved connectors. What they refuse is the agent that acts. The promise of Ai that pays for things on your behalf has met the institutions that hold the money, and the institutions have said no.

Why the Banks are Right

It is tempting to read this as incumbents protecting their turf, and there is some of that. Schwab is steering clients to its own assistant, and cash that sits idle in current accounts is valuable to every bank. But the security case stands on its own.

Today, most consumer agents reach a bank the only way they can: the customer hands over a username and password, and the agent logs in as them. That creates three problems no bank can accept.

  1. Identity. An agent holding your password looks exactly like you. The bank cannot tell a helpful assistant from an account takeover.
  2. Scope. A password grants everything. There is no way to say the agent may buy groceries but may not empty the savings account.
  3. Liability. When an agent makes a bad payment, nobody knows who pays. Bank terms usually treat shared credentials as the customer's own negligence, so the customer carries the loss.

No amount of model quality fixes this. The weakness is not in the Ai. It is in how the Ai gets access to money.

The Missing Piece is a Mandate

What agent payments lack is a way for a customer to say: this agent acts for me, within these limits, until I take it back. A mandate that is granted, bounded and revocable.

UK open banking already works on that principle for data and payments. A provider gets access only through explicit customer consent, and the customer can withdraw it. Nothing equivalent yet exists for an autonomous agent spending money day to day, and the banks are right not to improvise one inside their own accounts.

So the question is not how to get agents into bank accounts. It is where an agent should hold spending power instead.

How KAELUM Fixes it: The Agent never touches the Bank

KAELUM separates the two jobs that today's agents mash together: moving money out of a bank, and spending it. The customer does the first, once, themselves. The agent only ever does the second, inside a space built for it.

  1. The Customer funds a KAE account. They buy KAE at a fixed £0.20 per unit, approving an Open Banking payment from their own bank app. The bank sees exactly what open banking was designed for: its own customer, giving explicit consent, paying a named payee.
  2. The KAE balance becomes the boundary. Whatever the customer loads is the most any agent can ever spend. Their bank account, savings and credentials stay out of reach.
  3. The Agent spends KAE with participating merchants and creators. Customers receive a 6%+ discount on goods when they spend KAE with participating merchants. A 4.5% platform fee applies.
  4. The Customer can stop it at any time. Permissions can be lowered or withdrawn, and the remaining balance stays the customer's.

That is the mandate the banks say is missing, built into the structure of the account. Granted by the customer, bounded by the balance and the rules, and revocable at will. The bank never has to tell an agent from its customer, because the agent never knocks on the bank's door.

K.A.T.E. governs the Rails. You govern the Spend.

A bounded balance is necessary, but not enough on its own. Inside KAELUM, every transaction is governed by K.A.T.E., the platform's Ai operating engine, built on Claude by Anthropic.

Permission levelWhat the agent can do
ObserveWatch and report. It cannot act.
RecommendPropose a purchase; the customer confirms every one.
AutonomousAct within limits the customer sets, with sensitive actions still passing a human approval gate.

The customer chooses a level for each capability, not one switch for everything. Three principles sit underneath:

  • Rules decide whether money moves, never a model. The agent can suggest; deterministic checks decide.
  • When a check cannot run, money waits for a person. The system fails safe, not open.
  • A named human is accountable for every agentic function. A model cannot be held responsible, so KAELUM does not pretend it can.

This is the human in the loop that Bank of America asked for, designed in from the start rather than bolted on.

What this Does not Claim

KAELUM does not open bank accounts to agents, and it does not ask banks to change their stance. It works with the line the banks have drawn. An agent spending KAE can pay KAELUM merchants and creators; it cannot pay your mortgage or move your savings. That narrowness is the point: a contained space where agents can be trusted, rather than a skeleton key to everything.

KAE is a commerce currency with a fixed price. It is not an investment, it does not change in value and it pays nothing for being held.

KAELUM is pre-launch and is working towards the appropriate regulatory permissions before it takes any customer funds. The platform and K.A.T.E. are built and in pre-launch testing. KAELUM has also contributed a practitioner paper on agent governance, "Governing the Rails", to the FCA Ai Lab.

From Locked out to Licensed in

The banks have made the right call for their accounts. But agents are not going away, and the customers who use them will not stop wanting them to shop, book and pay. The industry now needs places where agent spending is safe by design.

KAELUM is built to be one of them: fiat in once, with the customer's consent, then Ai spending inside limits the customer sets and can withdraw. K.A.T.E. governs the rails. You govern the spend.

Crypto is powered by Blockchain. KAELUM is powered by Ai.
