Offline. Signal Lost. Sale Kept. KAELUM.

Europe is still working out how Digital Money should behave when the Network disappears. Here is how KAELUM is answering that question with Ai.

By Greggar Deterville, Founder and CEO, KAELUM Technologies Ltd

Picture a Saturday market stall. The queue is six deep, the card reader is spinning, and the one bar of signal has just gone. The customer wants to pay. The trader wants to sell. The payment network has left the conversation.

This happens every day: at festivals, in basements, at pop-ups, on trains and in rural high streets. Digital payments have quietly become dependent on a live connection. When the connection fails, commerce stops.

Europe has noticed the same Gap

In June 2026 the European Parliament’s economics committee adopted its position on the digital euro, and offline use is central to it. The offline digital euro is designed to behave like physical cash. Value sits on the device and moves directly between devices, with no network involved. The committee is candid about the trade-off: lose the device and you lose the money, with no refund. Before launch, the European Central Bank still has to resolve offline risks such as double-spending. A roll-out of at least two years follows once it is authorised.

That tells you how hard the problem is. Making money work offline is easy. Making it work offline safely is not. A network is what normally stops someone spending the same money twice. Remove the network and you have to stop it some other way.

Most approaches try to solve this inside the device, by putting the trust into a chip. We took a different view.

Our View: don't take the Money Offline at all

At KAELUM we asked a different question. Instead of making money survive without the network, what if the money never leaves the network, and only the permission to spend it travels?

That is the idea behind KAELUM Offline Mode, which we have now built and are preparing for a closed pilot.

Here is how it works from the customer’s side:

  • Before you lose signal, you ask K.A.T.E., our Ai governance engine, to set aside a small offline allowance.
  • The allowance stays on your KAELUM account. It is never copied onto your phone. Your phone simply carries the right to spend it.
  • With no signal at all, you can pay a participating merchant, and their phone can check the payment is genuine.
  • When either phone reconnects, the payment settles on exactly the same terms as an online KAELUM payment. Customers receive at least 6% off with participating merchants. A 4.5% platform fee applies.
  • Anything you did not spend comes back to your balance automatically.

And if you lose your phone? You lose nothing. The value was never on it.

That is the line we kept coming back to while building it. Offline should not mean unprotected.

Where the Ai comes in

Every KAELUM transaction is governed by K.A.T.E., and Offline Mode is designed around one principle:

K.A.T.E. sets the limits before you go offline and checks every payment when you're back.

Before a customer goes offline, K.A.T.E. decides whether an allowance makes sense and how large it should be. When payments come back online, K.A.T.E. checks every one of them. Anything unusual is caught, the account concerned is paused for human review, and the KAELUM team is alerted.

We are deliberately not asking a chip, or a phone, to be the final word on trust. Intelligence sits at both ends of the offline moment, where it can see the whole picture.

Humans stay in charge throughout. Every part of Offline Mode can be switched on or off, limited or paused from our control centre. K.A.T.E. advises and protects; people decide.

What it means for Merchants

For merchants this is about not losing the sale. Stalls, pop-ups, events and anywhere with patchy coverage are exactly where small businesses trade, and exactly where card payments are least reliable. With Offline Mode, the trader’s phone can accept a KAELUM payment with no connection. The payment settles to their account when they are back online, with no chargebacks and no special hardware.

What it does Not Do

Being clear about limits builds trust. Offline Mode is for paying participating merchants, and that is all.

  • Top-ups, redemptions and payments between customers stay online only.
  • Allowances are deliberately small and time-limited.
  • Offline Mode opens first as a closed pilot. It widens only once our review processes are complete.

The Bigger Picture

Europe’s search for payment alternatives is accelerating. The digital euro is still years from launch. The UK is building its own account-to-account alternative to the card networks. Every one of these projects will have to answer the offline question eventually.

KAELUM’s answer is simple to explain and hard to break. Keep the value where it is safe. Let the permission travel. Let Ai check every step.

Crypto is powered by Blockchain. KAELUM is powered by Ai.

Where has a dropped signal cost you, or your business, a sale? I would like to hear the moments you think offline payments matter most.
