The web is quietly changing shape. More and more, shopping is starting to happen through Ai agents that understand what a person wants, find it, and assemble the order, all inside a single conversation. In September 2026, Anthropic made that future concrete by open-sourcing Claude Commerce Agents, a blueprint for building shopping and merchant agents with Claude. It is a serious piece of work: two agents, reference implementations across retail, travel, telecom and entertainment, and a plugin that builds an agent straight against a business's own backend.
But the blueprint stops at a line it draws on purpose. And that line is exactly where KAELUM begins.
The Agent that Takes you to the Cart
Claude Commerce Agents do the hard part of commerce beautifully. A shopper describes what they need, in plain language, and the agent searches the catalogue, weighs the options, and stages a cart ready to buy. It is the difference between browsing a shop and having a knowledgeable assistant hand you exactly the three things that fit your brief.
Then it stops. By design, the blueprint's checkout renders the cart for the host to complete and never charges a card. Anthropic built the intelligence and deliberately left the money to the ecosystem. It is a clean, honest boundary, and it leaves an obvious question hanging in the air: who settles the payment?
The Line Anthropic Drew on Purpose
That hand-off is the right call for a model provider. But it means every business that builds a Claude shopping agent arrives at the same cliff edge: a staged cart, and no native way to complete the sale. The default answer is to bolt on whichever conventional payment rail you already use. Which is fine, and also entirely undifferentiated. If an agent settles through the same rails as everyone else, the agent is just a nicer front end on the same old plumbing.
The more interesting answer is a settlement layer built for this moment: one that lets an agent complete a purchase in a currency designed for commerce, at a discount, inside a closed loop, with a human keeping control of the spend. That is what KAELUM Commerce Checkout is.
The Money Layer for Agentic Commerce
KAELUM Commerce Checkout implements Anthropic's blueprint over KAELUM. It plugs into the exact point where the blueprint hands off, and completes the purchase in KAE, the KAELUM commerce currency. The agent browses the KAELUM acceptance network, stages the cart, and passes it to KAELUM to settle. The shopper confirms the KAE spend on kaelum.app, and the sale is done.
One principle runs through all of it: K.A.T.E. governs the rails. You govern the spend. The agent can find, compare and stage, but it never moves money on its own. Settlement always passes a human approval gate. In a year when a lot of people are nervous about letting Ai touch their money, that is the whole point. The Ai handles the rails. The person keeps the wallet.
Why Closed-Loop and why KAE
KAE is a commerce currency, not a cryptocurrency. It is fixed at £0.20 per unit, it does not appreciate, and it is not an investment. Its value is utility: customers spend KAE with participating merchants and receive a 6%+ discount for doing so. The whole system is a closed loop, governed by Ai through K.A.T.E., which is powered exclusively by Claude.
KAELUM is pre-launch and is working towards the appropriate regulatory permissions before it takes any customer funds. Stability by design, not speculation, is the point. An agent settling a purchase should move a known, fixed unit of commerce value, not a volatile asset.
Built in the Open
KAELUM Commerce Checkout is public and open-source, sitting next to Anthropic's own reference, and it has been proven against the live KAELUM platform: a real merchant, a real hosted checkout, a real settlement in KAE. 8T Clothing, the first verified KAELUM merchant, already has its full catalogue live and agent-discoverable. The building blocks are not a promise; they are running.
Where this Goes
Agentic commerce is coming whether or not the payments industry is ready for it. As agents do more of the shopping, someone has to settle the money, and settlement is where trust, control and value actually live. Anthropic built the agent that gets you to the cart. KAELUM built the layer that gets you paid, in a currency made for commerce, inside a loop you control.
Crypto is powered by Blockchain. KAELUM is powered by Ai.
